ALEXANDRIA HISTORY

ALEXANDRIA HISTORY
Built by ALEXANDER THE GREAT in 331 B.C. Before that time, Alexandria was only a small fishing village called RACODIS. Itwas a peninsula surrounded by the Mediterranean from one side and the huge lake of King Mariot from the other. Facing the land of Alexandria, there was an island called PHAROS island. ALEXANDER THE GREAT called his city "ALEXANDRIA AT THE END OF THE WORLD". ALEXANDER THE GREAT, after giving the order to Dinocratis to construct his city, travelled to Siwa to be purified and washed by the GOD AMON, as a gesture of respect to the Pharaonic traditions and beliefs. Alexander was then crowned by Amon and was thus named SON OF AMON.
By this visit, Alexander the Great put the Egyptian GOD in his body and soul which enabled him to be a pharaoh of Egypt and to govern Egypt by the name of "GOD of Egyptians" (which nowadays means that he was nationalized as an Egyptian and was allowed to rule Egypt as a king on this land). For this reason, Alexander the Great wrote on the City: "BUILT BY THE KING ALEXANDER THE SON OF GOD". This holy image was transmitted to all the kings and queens who came after him, till CLEOPATRA the 7th. These were the last pharaohs of Egypt, who were all Egyptians by nationality, belonging, beliving and praying to the Egyptian GODS.
ALEXANDER THE GREAT chose the engineer Dinocratis to design and plan the construction of Alexandria. The first construction which took place at that time was of the bridge connecting the PHAROS island to the land of the village. Dinocratis then paved 2 main streets, one longitudinal and the another vertical, crossing each other (still existing at the same location till the present date). The other streets were paved in parallel horizontally and vertically, which gave the city the appearance of a chess table. Two third of the city area was full of palaces and gardens at that time and the total population by the time it was complete was 300 thousand (as mentioned in Dr. Ezzat Koddos' book ref.). The light house of ALEXANDRIA, one of the 7 wonders of the world, was built by Ptolemy II. It had 3 floors (according to J.Y.Empereur book). The first floor was quadrangular, the second was octagonal, and the third was cylindrical with Zeus statue on top of it. This statue was of 135m height. At the entrance of the lighthouse there were the statues of Ptolemy the king and his queen, facing the sea as a welcoming sign to the boats visiting Alexandria. Parts of the lighthouse and these statues are now lying underwater at 7m. depth. Ptolemy statue, however, was removed and replaced at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the Library of Alexandria).
